His father built the house long ago overlooking the marshland with Plum Island, Massachusetts in the distance. It had been added onto and renovated but this couple still needed more space to entertain their extended families and lots of friends. They decided upon a soft curved look to offset the existing angular sharpness of the house. Work began and the dream took shape. On the second floor the old chimney was the beginning of an idea that changed everyone’s view. Our original design had French doors and full walls dividing the existing from the new addition, but as soon as the space was opened up, the views were jaw dropping. It was decided on the spot that the entire space would become one, with the fireplace as the centerpiece. We then designed the peek-a-boo fireplace with bookshelves on the sides to give it a more pronounced purpose. Long windows grace every wall with views of Plum Island and beyond. On the first floor their existing guest bedroom was transformed into a wonderful library with an alcove for all the grandchildren’s toys to be tucked away. French door open onto the screen porch that is the new first floor addition. It is quite the getaway from the rest of the house and the cooling ocean breezes make it easy to relax.
