These customers bought their lot with an indescribable house(see second picture). The only thing they told us to do was to call them after we'd torn it down! What we designed to replace it was quite different.
We had many hurdles - lot restraints being the biggest. We only had a small rectangle for the footprint, & it was a tight 20x50.
How do you make this feel livable?
We began with 10' ceilings on the first floor. We then wrapped windows, topped with transoms, around two full walls.
As you step down from the brick foyer, we wanted a feeling of being part of the pristine out-of-doors. This was partly accomplished by eliminating any overhead kitchen cabinets. We worked with our customer to find just the right windows.
Our customer had quite a collection of glassware to show off. Using beadboard, French doors & low voltage lighting we built just the right cabinet for them.
As you can see there are no grills on the bottom sashes - hence, an unobstructed view as you sit anywhere.
The entire first floor is one open area letting furniture delineate each living space. We went out of our way to get furniture measurements to make sure each piece had the space it deserved.
Looking towards the kitchen you can see the secret for kitchen space! The two doors on the left open to two large pantries - tucked right under the stairs. We utilized every bit of space we could.
